Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

The eyes are one of the most noticeable features of a person’s face and often show early signs of ageing. This is due to changes in the elasticity of the eyelid skin and underlying tissue. Often skin folds form in the upper eyelid and this gradually covers the upper lid proper often progressing to the stage where it may interfere with the movement of the upper eyelid and ultimately interfere with vision. Excess skin in the lower eyelid often results in wrinkling, while excess fat in the lower lid causes bulges which are often worse in the evening.
Patients seek eyelid surgery because the eyelids have become droopy, puffy or sagging. Patients often say that the look tired even when they are feeling fine. Such eyelid problems can make you look older than your actual age.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids only, the lower eyelids only, or both and occasionally, itt can also be done with a facelift. It can also be used to add an upper eyelid crease for Asian eyes.

Aim of Surgery

A blepharoplasty operation aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing the excess skin and fat. This often has a dramatic effect on a person’s appearance. The operation does not remove the crows feet wrinkles or the dark circles around the eyes.

Commonly asked Questions

Are there any scars?

Very fine incisions are made in the fold of the upper eyelid and just beneath the lashes of the lower eyelids. These result in scars which are barely visible although they may be slightly reddened and itchy foe a few weeks.

Are there any complications?

No major complications are anticipated although occasionally excess bleeding may cause bruising of the eyelids. This does not affect the final result as the bruising usually settles after a few days.

How long does the operation take?

The operation takes about one to one and a half hours.

How long am I in hospital?

The operation is performed as a day-case if only one lid is done. You are in hospital for one night is both eyelids are done or if you have had a face lift.

Is the operation painful?

It is rare for patients to experience any pain following a blepharoplasty operation.
When can makeup be applied?

Make up can usually be applied after the stitches have been removed in about 5 to 7 days.
